PETE ROSS
PETE ROSS is an accomplished recording artist and dynamic live performer whose distinctive voice and original material has generated a significant following across Europe, USA and his native Australia.
Pete grew up in a musical household, with his father Peter Ciani a successful singer and musician, and his mother Martha running her own record shop in the 70's. Despite his father discouraging him from getting into the music industry, knowing what a hard bitch she is, Pete taught himself to play guitar in his early twenties, and by the mid-90's was regularly playing in various bands. After moving to Melbourne, a city known for its strong musical culture, Pete joined Dan Brodie and the Broken Arrows and spent the early part of the 2000's touring with them.
In 2004 Pete left the band and formed his own; Pete Ross and the Paesano's, and went on the Australian circuit, eventually gaining recognition as a finalist at the CCMA song-writing awards, and runner-up Aristocrat Country Entertainer of the Year at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. His debut record, "Six String Suicide" was described by Brewster Hipik of Seed Magazine as a "manicured collection of blues, rock, country and narrative that in chorus is connected by honest soul and emotion." Tony McMahon of Inpress Magazine hailed it as "contender for debut album of the year" and it was featured across Australian radio, highlighted by becoming the runner-up Album of the Year on Byron Bay's BayFM.
Pete headed to Europe in 2008 to test out hitherto uncharted waters. From this excursion he managed to secure a record deal for the album in Italy with Halidon Music, and get himself three appearances on RAI TV. Sometimes referred to as the Australian Johnny Cash, Pete has been on the road in Europe, the US and back home in Australia ever since, clocking up as many miles and shows as he possibly can. A 2010 tour in the States included SXSW in Austin and Greune Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. He has also performed at some of France's largest country music festivals such as Mirande, American Journeys (Cambrai) and Festi-West (Saint Privat).
Now joined by his partner, Susy Sapphire, as bassist and co-writer, 2011 saw the release of an acoustic album "Midnight Show" through French label, Beast Records. Martin Jones of Rhythms Magazine writes that with this album Pete has "successfully indulged in that melodramatic noir tone that 'The Continent' somehow seems to bring out in artists" and describes the album as "an acoustic soundtrack to a dark and psychedelic spaghetti western."
Pete, accompanied by his band, The Midnight Show, have spent the most part of 2011 promoting the album, in particular in France and Australia. This has included performances at the Binic Folk & Blues Festival and the Tarascon Country Festival, as well as a Beast Records night at the infamous Tote Hotel in Melbourne. The other part of 2011 has seen Pete working on his third studio album which will be released in 2012. The album features a big band, taking inspiration from the early seventies Vegas sound. Plans are underway to tour with a 9-piece band which will include a horn section and backing singers
